SOMATIC EXPERIENCING
Somatic Experiencing Bodywork is a body-centered approach to resolving trauma symptoms and relieving chronic stress. This approach combines gentle touch and somatic exercises with compassionate dialogue to support the client’s awareness of how their body communicates with what the mind and emotions are experiencing. This method brings into awareness sensations, posture, imagery, emotions, and personal narratives which can help clients relate to themselves and others with more regulation, resilience, and authenticity. This approach is done with clothes on, laying on the massage table, and involves as little or as much communication the client prefers.
Sensory feedback from the bones, muscles, fascia and organs provide information about our emotional state of being. Anytime the body comes under a threat there is potential for the system to “hold onto” the experience. Subconsciously one may be holding their shoulders rigid, clenching their abdomen, or be stuck in a chronic heightened state of arousal (fight, flight or freeze). This can result in chronic pain or discomfort, relationship difficulties, autoimmune disorders, headaches/migraines, gastrointestinal problems, fatigue, sleep issues, anxiety, depression, dissociation and more. Physiological distress may be caused from a variety of experiences, such as auto and other accidents, injury, surgery, assault, abuse, neglect, attachment trauma, witnessing violence, difficult childbirth, wartime experience, natural disasters, or anything else that threatens one’s life. By learning to track how your individual autonomic nervous system responds to its environment and putting words to the sensations of the body, the nervous system learns it is safe to feel what was once too overwhelming to feel. This gentle work teaches the body to unwind into relaxation and wholeness.
The therapist uses non-moving touch with light pressure when hands-on assistance is desired. Using techniques of titration and pendulation, awareness will be brought to areas of the body that hold trauma (showing up as a surplus of energy- chronic tension, lack of mobility, constriction, pain, etc) Touch allows the practitioner to feel what is happening in the nervous system, and when it moves in and out of activation and regulation.
THERAPEUTIC TABLE MASSAGE
Therapeutic massage is tailored to meet the needs of the client. you will discuss your goals for the session and the pressure and pace will be adjusted accordingly. techniques involve trigger point therapy, stretching, neuromuscular and myofascial release to work out chronic patterns of pain and muscle tension. My sessions tend to be slower and deeper.
shiatsu
Zen shiatsu is of Japanese origin, performed on a cushioned floor mat with the client fully clothed. it is an amazing way to bring you fully in-touch with your body’s energetic systems, balancing out the meridians. deep stretching, firm compression, percussion, and acupressure point techniques are used to balance energy and revitalize the body, mind, and spirit.
cupping
Cupping is a soft tissue therapy that encourages healing by creating a negative pressure or suction on the skin using plastic cups that pull up underlying tissues, blood, and other fluids close to the surface of the skin. the amount of time spent cupping will be determined during the session, while deep tissue, trigger point, and Swedish techniques are incorporated into the session. this is great for scar tissue, tight fascia, and circulation of fluids.
acupressure
Acupressure is a type of massage therapy in which manual pressure is applied to specific points on the body. it is a practice of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that is similar to acupuncture, except that it uses fingertip pressure instead of needles. the session is done on the table with clothes on, and can be used for both physical and emotional ailments. the practitioner will do an intake to determine which energy pathways need support. this is relaxing and quiet work, if not spiritual.
Virtual Somatic Coaching
Virtual Somatic Coaching is a body-centered therapeutic approach designed to help individuals process and resolve trauma and chronic stress. The client typically comes to the session with something they want to work on, an idea of what they want out of somatic work, or how they hope somatic work might support them. Somatic Experiencing is just as effective virtually as it is in person, and is great for clients wanting to remain in the comfort of their home, those dealing with chronic pain, or those that don’t live locally.
